K-2: "Stained Glass" Heart Cards
This craft helps kids make a unique card for their parents for Valentines Day.
Materials
1. Ironing board and iron
2. Waxed paper
3. Wax crayons (cheap ones)
4. Pink, red or white construction paper.
5. Brown grocery bag
6. Glue Sticks.
7. Scissors
8. Hand-held sharpener large enough for crayons.
Instructions
To make the ‘stained glass’
1. Prepare the iron: turn on the iron to medium heat with no steam. Cover the ironing board with the grocery bag paper to protect it.
2. Tear off square pieces of waxed paper (at least 8.5” x 11”).
3. Instruct children to fold their piece of waxed paper in half, make a crease, and then open it again. Have the kids shave crayons of different colors onto one half of the waxed paper using the sharpener.
4. Carefully place the waxed paper with shavings on to the ironing board. Give the child one last chance to arrange the shavings. Fold the waxed paper so that the shavings are sandwiched in between the waxed paper and then fold the open sides over 1/2” so no wax gets out when you iron.
5. Cover the project with more brown paper and iron for about 10 seconds. Let it cool.
To make the card.
1. Get 2 pieces of colored construction paper.
2. Put the pieces together, fold them in half.
3. Cut out half of a heart shape into the papers, such that when you open them, you get hole in the shape of a complete heart. Teachers may have to prepare this step for younger children.
4. Take the ‘stained glass’ paper. Have children sandwich it in between the two pieces of the unfolded construction paper (one heart hole on each side. It should look like a heart shaped window with stained glass (see photo). Use glue to attach the construction paper to the waxed paper.
5. When dry, children can decorate the paper around the heart for their loved one.
